In comparison to the mid-nineteenth century, land was an even greater component of wealth estimates in 1895-1904. Value of livestock, equipment and other goods was usually quite low, and was not decisive in defining level of wealth despite a positive association between these values and wealth.47 In the province as a whole and in its main regions there were negative average credit balances, which reduced household wealth (Table 5,8). All this speaks of socioeconomic pressures on the smaller productive units, especially in and around the provincial capitel.
